Itanagar is an alluring leisure destinations nestled at the foothills of Himalayan range in far North-East of India. Situated 350 metres above sea level, Itanagar the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, is a beautiful hilly town covered with lush green forests and majestic Himalayan mountain ranges. Itanagr is popularly known as 'the Land of Dawn lit Mountains'. Because of its closeness to the plains of Assam, the whether is very pleasent and moderate here.

The ruins of 500 years old Ita Fort is an important landmark of Itanagar. The name of the city has derived its name from this fort. The fort has an irregular shape, built mainly with bricks dating back to the 14th-15th Century is identified as the Mayapur of Ramachandra, a king of the Jitari Dynasty.

The colorful Thupten Gatsal Ling Gompa (monastery) situated on a small hill in the Itanagar city is a must visit to enjoy the simple yet aesthetic Tibetan architecture and the scencic surrounding with a varities of colorful flowers.

Ganga Lake (Gyakar Sinyi) is another place worth visit . It is a located in a pictirque location 6km away from the main town, surrounded by primeval vegetation, orchids and rock mass, 6 kms away from Itanagar,

Best Time to visit Itanagar


The temperature ranges from 32°C to 18°C during summer. May to June is considered to be the summer season. In summers Himalayan bridge make the atmosphere cool and pleasant.


Monsoon in Itanagar starts from July and lasts till September. Due to heavy and frequent rainfall the weather remains damp during monsoon. It is advisable to avoid visiting Itanagar in rainy season because of bad road condition.


Winter starts from October and last till April. Temperature ranges from 22°C to 8°C during these days. You have to wear heavy woollen in winter to save yourself from cold.

How to reach Itanagar

By Air

Lilabari airport located in North Lakhimpur district of Assam is the nearest airport(57 km). Guwahati is the nearest International airport located at a distance of 324km from Itanagar.

Helicopter Service

Helicopter service is available to Naharlagun form Guwahati and Dibrugarh airport.

By Railways

Harrmoty railway station is the nearest railway station situated at a distance of 32 km from Itanagar. Another nearest railhead is North Lakhimpur (60 km). Trains from North Lakhimpur connect to Guwahati which is well connected to most major cities of the country.

By Road

Daily bus services are available from various places of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to Itanagar. Overnight buses ply to Itanagar from Guwahati daily.

Buses are available from Tezpur , Banderdewa, Guwahati and North Lakhimpur , Ziro, Bombdila, Pasighat, Balijan etc.

Situated at a distance of 175km from Itanagar, Bhalukpong is a picturesque place located along the Kameng river in the border of Assam and Arunachal pradesh. It is a utopia for adventure lovers. Angling and river rafting are the preeminent activities in Bhalukpung. Pakhui Game Sanctuary and Tipi Orchidariurm which houses 2600 cultivated orchids from 80 different species is also located near Bhalukpong.
