Spread across the Eastern Himalayan range of India, in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh is the Namdapha national park & tiger reserve. It is the third largest national park in the country. Namdapha is popular today for being the Tiger reserve along with serving as a top biosphere for a wide range of birds, and other animals and of course butterflies. Namdapha National Park is globally renowned for being the sole park housing four majestic species of big cats: the Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Clouded Leopard. Namdapha is the best destination for bird lovers and butterfly watchers.

The vast evergreen rainforest region is one of the tops draws for environmentalists and nature enthusiasts among the photographers and even general tourists who come here primarily to spot tigers. Located in a quaint little place called Miao, the National Park is also a well-known nature enthurist and birding hot-spot and draws thousands of visitors every year. The gorges, the dense forests and the Himalayan range rising in the background, make this place an ideal spot for trekking and touring in the lap of nature. Talking of the animals that you shall want to spot, tigers, clouded leopards, snow leopards and even leopards in general prowl around these ranges. In fact, this is probably the only such biospheres that host these four of the feline members in its midst. The entire forest has around 150 species of timber and even a wide variety of chimp family members are here. Primates like the Pig-tailed Macaque and Assamese Macaque, along with the Hoolock Gibbons are here. Red Panda, Gaurs, Asiatic Black Bears, Red fox, elephants, and Oriental Small-clawed Otter are also other inhabitants here.

The rich biosphere of Namdapha comprises of 10 species of earthworms, 50 species of reptiles, 430 species of insects, 140 species of butterflies, 76 species of fishes and 453 species of birds in its midst. If this should pique your curiosity then you should not delay your trip to the Namdapha. Among birds, the rare and endangered Wood Ducks, the Great Indian Hornbills, the Bengal Floricans are regulars here. Butterflies like Naga Treebrown and Red Caliph are here.

Apart from the National Park, visiting the nearby village of the Lisu tribe Chakma village and getting to see their culture and eating their local tribal food is quite a pleasant way to conclude the trip.

Trekking in Namdapha

Best way to invade the thick forest of Namdapha is strolling through the alleys inside the forest. You will be shocked by seeing the vast territory of birds, insects and butterflies inside this scenic woodland. Noa Dihing river flowing through the park made your trek more exciting. We recommend you to contact a local guide to venture the park.

Inner Line Permit

Touring across Arunachal Pradesh would require ILP or Inner Line Permit. You might acquire this permit from New Delhi or even from the district headquarters. Tourists planning a visit must get this first as early as possible. Contact your tour operator for this. A permit would cost as much as $50 per person.

Best time to visit

Best season to visit this park is winter season starting from November to April on the other hand summer is the best time to explore butterfly. Every year Namdapha Butterfly Meet held here in the month of October.

How to reach Namdapha

By Air
The nearest airport of Namdapha is Dibrugarh Airport, which is located at a distance of 182 km from Deban. From Dibrugarh taxi and state transport bus available to Miao the nearest town of Namdapha.

By Railways
Tinsukia is the major railway station closest to Namdapha located at a distance of 141 km away. You can avail Arunachal and Assam state transport buses or shared taxi to reach Miao from Tinsukia.

By Road
Miao is the nearest town connecting from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to Namdapha. It's around 141 km from Tinsukia and 163 km from Dibrugarh town of Assam. Private taxis are available from both the places to Miao. From Miao you have to reach Deban the entry point of Namdapha National Park. Deban is located inside the deep jungle of Namdapha.
Public vehicle did not available to reach Namdapha so its better to hire a private vehicle if you want to visit Namdapha national park.

Places to Stay Near Namdapha National Park

Deban forest Bungalow is the only accommodation adjusted to the dense forest of Namdapha National Park. Forest bungalow is very basic and needs advance booking from forest department. Several accommodations are available for a stay in Miao.

Camping is also available in Deban and Miao.
