Overview

Situated close to Guwahati city, Pobitora sanctuary is the home of a large population of one-horned rhino. It is a scenic forest just an hour drive from Guwahati. The sanctuary is one of the three main wildlife reserves in Assam, after Kaziranga and Manas. It also gained fame for being a hub for the one-horned rhinoceros that live here in peace and draws thousands of photographers and wildlife enthusiasts every year.

Nearly 100 rhinoceros lives in Pobitora within an area of 16 sqkm only. Besides rhinoceros, other animals like leopard, wild boar, Barking deer, wild buffalos, feral buffalos, and fishing cats among others. The sanctuary is also proud for being a home to a wide variety of birds along with welcoming migratory birds too. Approximately 375 species of birds have made Pobitora their home. Birds like Hill Mynah, Khalij Pheasant, Osprey, and Indian pied hornbill are available here in plenty.

Road to Pobitora from Guwahati is very beautiful and passes by scenic village roads. This one hour journey through nature is another best experience in addition to safaris in the Pobitora. One needs to cross rivers, domestic goats, cows, duck and other animals as well as paddy fields on the road to Pobitora.
