Northeast India Travel Overview for Foreign Tourists

Discover a quieter side of India through extraordinary landscapes, living cultures, wildlife and authentic local experiences.

As a leading Northeast India travel guide specializing in experiential journeys, Nexplore Travel curates bespoke Northeast India tour packages for international travelers seeking to explore beyond the classic tourist trails. Comprising eight unique states tucked away near the borders of Bhutan and Myanmar, this region remains the least visited part of the country by foreign nationals—and that is exactly its charm.
It is the least visited part of India by international travelers, and that is precisely the point. More than 200 distinct tribal communities live here, many with living cultural traditions that have never been packaged for tourism. You will find one-horned rhinos in Kaziranga, root bridges grown rather than built across Meghalaya's river gorges, and Buddhist monasteries at 10,000 feet in Arunachal Pradesh — usually without another foreign visitor in sight.
A Northeast India tour is a different proposition from the Golden Triangle. It is slower, wilder, and it asks more of you. Most people who come here say it is the India they did not know existed. Whether you are looking for a tailored 7 days Meghalaya itinerary or seamless assistance securing complex protected area permits (PAP) for Arunachal Pradesh, our locally-based team ensures a smooth, safe, and profoundly meaningful cultural exchange.

Lovely experience!

We had a fabulous experience with Nexplore travel. Manash organised our trip to Assam and included everything we asked for. We had 4 days in Assam so we managed to get to Kaziranga and saw the one horned Rhino. We then had a couple of days in Guwahati where went to the silk production village of Sualkuchi.. "

A fabulous trip with Nexplore.

"We had a fabulous 9-day tour in Assam. Our focus was on seeing the wildlife and silk-making from the silkworm to the finished product. Majuli was a fascinating place to see, crossing the Brahmaputra to get there an experience. The food and accommodation were all excellent and we especially loved the Banyan Grove Tea Resort - a lovely place to stay."

Travel to Assam at its best

We went to 5 days Assam tour. We booked this trip last minute and were immediately helped with scheduling tours of the Kaziranga and major attractions. Anushila picked us up at the airport in the most welcoming way. They adjusted the tour for our requests to see a tea plantation and the city where most silk production occurs, Sualkuchi..."

Memorable family heritage tour to Assam

We had a wonderful visit to Assam and thanks to Nexplore travel for the first class organisation of our trip. We explain the purpose of our visit was to see where family members were born, worked in the tea industry and spent time. Manash managed to arrange this perfectly and exceeded our expectations."

"We are city folks from Singapore and to have experienced Arunachal Pradesh and Assam rugged beauty, landscape, history, culture and food is awesome. This 19 days trip was made possible by Nexplore Travel. They are probably the best travel agents for Northeast India tours. I found the contact on Google and got in touch with the team. Frequently Asked Questions

Northeast India Entry Permits, Safety & Travel FAQs

Here are the questions our international guests ask most before booking. If yours isn't answered here, write to us directly — we typically reply within 24 hours.

Assam Meghalaya and Tripura is freely accessible to foreign visitors with a valid Indian visa. However Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Sikkim and Mizoram require PAP for foreign national and ILP for Indian. Check our detail permit guide for international tourists.

  • Nagaland — A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required to visit Nagaland. Nexplore arranges permits on your behalf. Processing takes 5–7 working days and requires a copy of your passport and Indian visa.
  • Arunachal Pradesh — A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required. Processing takes 5–7 working days and requires your passport and two passport-size photographs. Nexplore handles all applications.
  • Sikkim — A Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required for all foreign nationals to enter any part of Sikkim. A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is additionally required for North Sikkim destinations including Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Tsomgo Lake. Foreign nationals are not permitted at Nathula Pass or Gurudongmar Lake.
We handle the paperwork.
We apply for every permit our guests need as part of the package. You send us a passport scan and your travel dates; we handle the rest.

Most international visitors enter India on an e-Visa, applied for online in advance. Requirements change periodically, so check the official Indian government e-Visa portal for current rules relating to your nationality.

Your Indian e-Visa is separate from the state permits described above. Depending on your itinerary and nationality, you may need both.

Yes. Northeast India is a safe and welcoming destination for international visitors. The region has seen significant improvements in stability over the past two decades and tourism from Europe, North America, Australia and Southeast Asia has grown steadily as a result. Our guests from Sweden, Germany, France, New Zealand, Singapore and other countries have toured the region — including remote tribal areas in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh — without incident. We provide 24/7 on-ground support throughout your tour, and all our drivers and guides are vetted and experienced with international visitors. As with travel anywhere, we advise following local customs, avoiding restricted border zones and keeping your permit documents accessible.

Yes. All Nexplore tour guides are fluent English speakers. Many of our guides for tribal and cultural tours also speak local tribal languages and have personal or family connections to the communities you visit — which is what makes the difference between a tourist visit and a genuine cultural experience. Our guides have been specifically praised in multiple 5-star international reviews. We do not currently offer guided tours in languages other than English and Hindi, but we can connect you with specialist multilingual guides in certain destinations on request.

The right operator for Northeast India depends on how you want to travel. Look for three things: a locally based team who can actually arrange Inner Line Permits, direct relationships with the communities you will visit, speak and understand local languages, and guides drawn from those communities. Nexplore is based in Guwahati and has worked with Konyak, Angami and Apatani communities for 10 years.

Indian Rupees (INR) are the currency used throughout Northeast India. ATMs are widely available in major towns and most accept international Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards. We also assist you to exchange cash.
However, ATMs in remote areas (Mon district in Nagaland, interior Arunachal Pradesh) are scarce — we recommend carrying sufficient cash in INR before entering these areas. Your tour cost is quoted in INR; you may pay by bank transfer or cash.

Yes, and we take the ethics of tribal tourism very seriously. Nexplore Travel operates on community-based principles: we pay entry fees directly to tribal communities, use locally-run homestays and guesthouses where available, employ guides who are from or have deep connections with the communities they represent, and always obtain permission before entering villages. We do not treat tribal visits as spectacles — visits are arranged as genuine cultural exchanges, and guests are briefed beforehand on customs, photography etiquette, and appropriate behaviour. Communities we work with in Nagaland (Konyak, Angami, Ao) and Arunachal Pradesh (Apatani, Monpa, Adi) have ongoing relationships with Nexplore that go back years.

October to April is the main travel season, and it is when most of our tours operate.

  • October–November: Clear skies, post-monsoon greenery and excellent conditions for Meghalaya's waterfalls and living root bridges.
  • December: Peak festival season, including the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, held from 1–10 December each year.
  • January–February: Coldest and driest period, with excellent visibility for Arunachal's high-altitude routes and prime wildlife-viewing season in Kaziranga.
  • March–April: Warmer weather, blooming rhododendrons and generally fewer visitors.
  • May–September: Monsoon season. Meghalaya receives exceptionally heavy rainfall. The landscapes are beautiful, but heavy rain can affect roads and flights.

Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) is the main gateway to Northeast India. It has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and other major Indian cities, as well as direct connections from Bangkok, Dhaka and a few international routes.
Most international visitors fly into Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata and connect to Guwahati on a domestic flight — the connection is usually straightforward and takes 2–3 hours. We can assist with suggesting domestic flight options as part of your trip planning.

Fly into Delhi or Kolkata, then take a domestic flight to Guwahati, the region's main gateway airport. There are no direct international flights into the Northeast. We meet every guest at Guwahati and handle all transport from there.

A single state such as Meghalaya works in 5–7 days. Two to three states comfortably need 10–15 days. Tribal festival itineraries need 8–15 days because village stays are built in around the festival. It will take more if you if include Sikkim, Mizoram or Manipur.

We recommend booking 3-4 months in advance, for smooth operation of your tour in Northeast India. As accommodation in many places fills up early during festivals and pick tourist seasons. All our packages are fully customizable — duration, pace, accommodation tier, specific activities, and permit requirements can all be adjusted to your preferences and travel dates. Send us your interests and travel window and we will propose an itinerary within 24 hours.

Roads in the hill states are slow. A 150 km drive can take five to six hours, depending on road conditions and the destination.

Our itineraries are therefore built around real travel times rather than map distances, so you know what to expect each day.

Accommodation ranges from comfortable hotels in Guwahati and Shillong to community homestays in tribal villages.

These local stays and interactions are often where travellers experience the culture, food and hospitality of Northeast India most personally.

We offer customized Northeast India tribal festival tours around some of the region’s most colourful cultural celebrations, including: 1. Hornbill Festival Tour – Nagaland
2. Ziro Festival of Music Tour – Arunachal Pradesh
3. Nyokum Festival Tour – Arunachal Pradesh
4. Losar Festival Tour – Arunachal Pradesh
5. Aoling Festival Tour – Nagaland
6. Bihu Festival Tour – Assam
These tours can be combined with tribal village visits, cultural experiences and local homestays to create a deeper India cultural journey. Festival dates vary each year, so we recommend planning in advance.
