Assam is the gateway to Northeast India. Guwahati Airport is the major International airport in the Northeast. It links to major Indian metropolis with daily flights. Three other major airports are also available in Assam connecting to Dibrugarh, Tezpur and Silchar.
Meghalaya (Shillong Airport), Manipur (Imphal Airport), Nagaland (Dimapur Airport) and Tripura (Agartala Airport) also have airports which connect via Delhi and Kolkata by regular flights.
Helicopter services are operated from Guwahati to Shillong, Tura, Naharlagun, and Tawang.


The Northeast Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways connects Assam with the rest of the country. Guwahati is the railway headquarters of the northeast region. The fastest train from Delhi to Guwahati is Guwahti Rajdhani Express (28 hrs) followed by North-East Express (32 hrs) and Dibrugarh bound Brahmaputra Mail (42 hrs), while the fastest train from Kolkatta(Howrah) is Saraighat Express.
Dimapur Rail station is one of the major rail head in Nagaland which is connected by Rajadhani Express from Delhi. Harmuty ( 33km) and North Lakhimpur (60km) ,are the nearest rail head from Itanagar Arunachal Pradesh. The nearest railhead to reach Meghalaya is Guwahati. Kumarghat is the nearest rail station to reach Tripura. Mizoram and Manipur do not have any rail links.


North eastern states has a well connected network of national highways and other roads to different cities and towns in and around. The State Transport and other private operators run daily bus services for all cities of Assam and to neighbouring states Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh . The National Highway Number 37, 31, 40, 38 and 52 connects Assam with other states in India.

Guwahati is the entry point to Meghalaya. It take 2.30 hrs to reach Shillong from Guwahati. Dimapur (Nagaland) is also well connected from Guwahati by frequent bus services. It takes 6-7 hrs to reach Dimapur from Guwahati. Bus service are available to Manipur, Mizoram and Silchor via Shillong and Dimapur. Tezpur (Assam) is the entry point of Eastern Arunachal, Bomdila and Tawang. Frequent Bus service are available to from Guwahati and Tezpur to Itangar and Tawang.

All the cities and towns are well connected with the State Transport Corporation and other bus services run by private operators.
