The town is located 27 kms from the capital of Manipur that is Imphal on the Tiddim Road and is situated on the foothills.

Visit Bishnupur is incomplete without visiting the famous Vishnu temple which has been built way back in the year 1497. The temple has a distinct Chinese influence in its architecture and design. It has a conical roof which is made in parabolic style and the temple body is two storied and is placed on a pedestal. You are bound to get mesmerised by the exquisiteness of this exceptionally crafted temple.

The Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake of Manipur and looks stunningly beautiful with the blue water and the beautiful colourful water plants. It looks like a miniature island sea. Hydropower project on the Imphal river is a must see. Built in 1983 this is a project which generates 105 MW of power which is supplied to Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Tripura.

The place is famous for being the natural habitat for the famous dancing deer Sangai which is sadly nearing extinction. You can see the deer in the world’s only floating national park that is the Keibul Lamjao National Park. This is the last natural habitat for this lovely dancing deer. It is a visual treat to see Sangai, Hog deer Otter and plenty of migratory birds in this wetland ecosystem. The forest department has watch towers and 2 rest houses within the park. Bishnupur is also very famous for its stone production.


The best time to visit Bishnupur is the winters and the arrival of summers. The favourable months are between September to April. The climate remains pleasing during these months offering tourists the best holiday experience.
